Assam New Muslim Marriage Law: The Assam Government has passed the New Muslim Marriage Law. Under this, registration of all marriages and divorces of the people of the community in the state has been made mandatory. The purpose of the Assam Compulsory Muslim Marriage and Divorce Registration Bill 2024 is to prohibit child marriage, ensure consent between both parties, protect the rights of women and prevent polygamy. Under this new law for registration of Muslim marriages, now Qazis or Muslim scholars will not need to register marriages, whereas it was mandatory under the old law.
