After heavy rains in Nepal for the last five days, there have been flood -like conditions in five districts in Bihar and water is filling in low -lying areas. After heavy rains, all 56 gates of Kosi Barrage on the Bihar-Nepal border have been opened after which the Kosi River, Kamla Balan River, Bagmati river are in spate.
The rivers (small streams) of the Adhwara Group are buried in the monsoon, which causes flood situation. The way Bihar Five districts of North Bihar can be submerged again due to continuous rains in some parts.
Why Kosi river wreakes havoc in Bihar
The Kosi river originating from Nepal also flows in Bihar. Repeatedly changing the stream and breaking the embankment is the biggest problem in this area. At the same time, the Kamla Balan river comes out of Nepal and brings floods in areas like Madhubani, Darbhanga and Saharsa and Supaul, while Bagmati river comes out of the hills of Nepal and causes floods in many districts of North Bihar.
Both Saharsa and Supaul fall in the Kosi region of Bihar and are part of North Bihar, which is adjacent to Nepal’s foothills. This is the reason that after the release of water from Nepal, Kosi has taken the form of a rage, so that half a dozen districts of Bihar will be drowned and the population of lakhs will be badly affected. In the last 24 hours, five and a half lakh cusecs of water has been released from Kosi Barrage, due to which the situation has become more serious.
Appeal to people to visit high places
In the low-lying areas of districts like Saharsa-Supaul, the administration is appealing to the people to move to high places at the earliest through loud speakers. Supaul, Saharsa, Madhepura and Khagaria are expected to cause more damage especially.
The Kosi River of South-Eastern Nepal, which causes floods in Bihar every year, is currently flowing above the danger mark. The government has started preparations like emergency in the affected districts and appealed people to go to high areas. During the monsoon this year in Nepal, more than 100 people have died so far, while dozens of people are still missing and the rain continues.
