Telecom operator Vi on Monday, December 15, launched an industry-first handset theft and loss insurance plan for its prepaid customers on both iOS and Android devices. Available with select prepaid recharge packs, this offering addresses a major customer concern related to smartphone loss, which is largely not covered by traditional damage-only insurance policies. As per the company, Vi prepaid customers can claim theft/loss protection cover of up to Rs 25,000 with packs starting at just Rs 61.
Smartphone Penetration and Rising Replacement Costs
According to a report published by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in May 2025, about 85.5 per cent of households have at least one smartphone.
According to an industry report, the handset insurance market is estimated to reach $2.6 billion this year, growing at around 14 per cent annually, while the cost of replacing a mid-range phone typically ranges between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000.
