Highlights of the bill
This bill guarantees 125 days of wage employment to adult members of rural families for unskilled manual work.
According to Section 22 of the Bill, the fund sharing pattern between the Central and State Governments will be 60:40. Whereas for North-Eastern States, Himalayan States and Union Territories (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir) it will be 90:10.
Under Section 6 of the Bill, state governments can notify in advance a total period of 60 days in a financial year which will cover the peak agricultural season of sowing and harvesting.
Opposition’s uproar in Lok Sabha
The Lok Sabha had passed the bill on Thursday amid protests and sloganeering by opposition members. In protest against the bill, opposition MPs also created a ruckus in the well of the House and raised slogans against the government for removing Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the Rural Employment Scheme and tore copies of the bill and threw them towards the Speaker’s chair.
