The United States is exploring a range of military options against Iran, including the possibility of deploying ground troops and launching large-scale airstrikes, according to a report by Axios citing multiple officials familiar with the discussions.
The report comes amid escalating tensions in the region, particularly over concerns about Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz. These measures could reportedly be considered if diplomatic efforts fail and threats to global shipping continue.
According to sources cited by the outlet, the idea of a “final blow” is being discussed as a way to either strengthen Washington’s position in future negotiations or to bring the conflict to a decisive end. However, no final decision has been taken so far.
Among the options under review is targeting Iran’s key oil infrastructure. One proposal involves seizing or blockading Kharg Island, which serves as a major hub for Iran’s oil exports. Another option focuses on Larak Island, located near the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran operates bases and radar systems that monitor maritime movement.
A third possibility includes military action on Abu Musa Island in the eastern Persian Gulf. The island gives Iran strategic control over ships leaving the Gulf and is also claimed by the United Arab Emirates, a close ally of the US.
In addition, officials are considering measures to directly disrupt Iran’s oil shipments by intercepting or taking control of vessels carrying its exports.
The report also highlights discussions around Iran’s nuclear programme. One option involves deploying US troops to secure highly enriched uranium believed to be stored deep within damaged nuclear facilities. Alternatively, airstrikes could be carried out to prevent access to the material.
Despite the range of options being considered, sources say US President Donald Trump has not yet approved any specific plan. The situation remains under review as the US weighs both military and diplomatic paths forward.
