Indian tennis stars delivered a remarkable performance at the ITF W15 Women’s World Ranking tournament, claiming all four titles in an international event that concluded here on Sunday.
Zeel Desai Triumphs in Singles
In a thrilling all-Indian singles final, Zeel Desai came from behind to defeat compatriot Shruti Ahlawat 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. After dropping the first set, Zeel regrouped and showcased her resilience to claim her first title of the season.
“It feels amazing to win after coming from behind,” said Zeel. “This is my second final of the year—I was runner-up in Monastir, Tunisia, in April but had to retire. Winning here is very special.”
Sravya Shivani and Pranjala Yadlapalli Shine in Doubles
The doubles final also featured an all-Indian showdown, with Sravya Shivani teaming up with experienced partner Pranjala Yadlapalli to dominate Mahika Khanna and Sohini Mohanty 6-4, 6-0. Their commanding performance underscored the depth and talent in Indian women’s doubles tennis.
All-Indian Sweep Highlights Growing Talent
With victories in both singles and doubles, Indian players took all four trophies at the tournament, a rare and memorable feat for the country’s tennis scene.
The event was hosted by The Tennis Project, led by India’s Billie Jean King Cup captain Vishal Uppal, who expressed his pride in seeing the home players succeed.
“The performance of the Indian players truly makes all the hard work in hosting such tournaments worth it,” Uppal said.
“The field was strong, featuring top-quality players from the USA, Russia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, and New Caledonia. Women’s tennis in India is showing real growth, and these results speak for themselves.”
The success of Indian players in this international tournament signals a promising future for the country on the women’s tennis circuit.
