Flights from Iran to the capitals of Iraq and Oman have been cancelled as new US sanctions targeting the country’s aviation sector take effect.

Iranian media reported on Tuesday that Baghdad and Muscat airports would stop accepting flights operated by Iranian airlines from midnight. The cancellations add to growing disruption for Iran’s international air links as Washington expands sanctions against the country’s carriers.

Tasnim news agency quoted an Iranian civil aviation spokesman as saying flights to other international destinations, including Istanbul, would continue as scheduled for the time being.

Iranian aviation officials were also discussing whether flights to Baghdad could be redirected to Najaf, a major destination for Iranian pilgrims.
