In a post on social media, CENTCOM said US forces began carrying out what it described as “self-defense strikes” on the orders of US President Donald Trump. The military said the operation was a direct response to what it called Iran’s role in bringing down the helicopter a day earlier.
US President Donald Trump also defended ongoing military strikes against Iran, saying the attacks are a direct response to Tehran’s role in bringing down the Apache helicopter over the Strait of Hormuz.
“This is a response to what they did with our helicopter last night, and I believe the response should be very strong, very powerful, and that’s what this one is,” he said.
The helicopter crashed off the coast of Oman but both crew members survived and were rescued in a first-of-its-kind operation involving a US Navy unmanned surface vessel.
