US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday described Jammu and Kashmir as an “important” part of India and hinted that the United States could review and potentially ease its travel advisory for Americans visiting the Union Territory.
Gor made the remarks during his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir as the US ambassador, where he met Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and other officials.
“It’s a pleasure to be here…This is an important part of India. I am here, visiting for the first time. It is an incredibly beautiful place. I am thrilled to be here, thrilled to see this place. We just had a very good meeting. We have some follow-ups, so we hope to take back to Washington, back to Delhi. But a very warm, a very cordial and we look forward to building this relationship forward,” Gor said during his visit.
He said the United States periodically reviews its travel advisories and indicated that Washington would examine whether the current advisory for Jammu and Kashmir should be downgraded.
“The United States puts out travel warnings and every so often we re-evaluate those travel warnings. I cannot make any big announcements here today, but it is something that we are going to look at,” Gor said.

The US envoy credited the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government with taking steps to improve safety in the region.
“New Delhi, the Chief Minister here, the government here, we believe have made some incredible steps to keeping this area safer and making it more safe,” he said.
Gor added that Jammu and Kashmir’s natural beauty and economic opportunities could attract more American visitors if the travel advisory is eased.
“This is a beautiful area. I think a lot of Americans would enjoy coming here and seeing the beauty and opportunity that exists here,” he said.
Omar Abdullah, meanwhile, described his meeting with the US ambassador as “good” and said discussions focused on India-US relations and ways in which the United States could support Jammu and Kashmir.
“We discussed relations between two countries and what US can do for us. We have legacy issues which we will be talking to resolve. We are hopeful and optimistic that relationship between J&K and US will go up,” Abdullah said.
US Travel Advisory For J&K
According to the US travel advisory, Jammu and Kashmir is currently classified under Level 4, “Do Not Travel”. The US advises its citizens not to travel to the Union Territory due to the risks associated with terrorism and civil unrest.
The advisory also flags several other areas in India, including the India-Pakistan border, Manipur, and parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Odisha, citing varying security concerns.
