The United States has launched a fresh wave of strikes against targets linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on Tuesday night.
The latest escalation comes as reports indicate that Iran has responded with anti-ship missiles reportedly launched towards US Navy warships in the Gulf of Oman.
CENTCOM confirms fresh strikes
“Today at 12 p.m. ET, U.S. forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) targets in Iran,” CENTCOM said in a post on X.
The US military command said the strikes followed recent attempted attacks by the IRGC against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and American service members deployed in the region.
The latest US operation marks a fresh escalation in the conflict between Washington and Tehran, with American forces carrying out strikes inside Iran.
Iranian missiles reportedly target US ships
As the new US strike wave began, anti-ship missiles were reportedly launched from Iran towards US Navy warships in the Gulf of Oman, according to reports.
There has been no confirmation so far on whether the missiles were intercepted, whether they struck any targets or whether they caused damage.
The reported launch would mark an immediate Iranian response to the latest US strikes.
The escalation is now taking place in both directions, with US forces striking targets inside Iran while Iranian missiles are reportedly being directed towards US naval forces.
Explosions reported near Bandar Abbas
Iran’s state broadcaster, IRIB, reported explosions east of Bandar Abbas, Masan village in Qeshm, and Hormuz Strait.
The report came amid the latest exchange of fire between the two sides and the fresh US strikes against IRGC targets.
CENTCOM’s confirmation of the US operation and reports of Iranian anti-ship missile launches indicate a rapid escalation in military activity.
Security alerts have been issued for Jordan and Oman amid the latest escalation.
The alerts said that “due to tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation.”
