UPSC Civil Services Mains 2025 begins today, here are the important guidelines.

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) will conduct the Civil Services Mains Examination 2025 from August 22 to August 31, 2025, in multiple sessions across the country. Candidates who qualified the preliminary examination earlier this year are eligible to appear in the mains stage.

Unlike the prelims, the mains test is designed to evaluate answer writing skills, analytical ability, critical thinking, and time management. Candidates are advised to strictly adhere to reporting times, as late entry to examination centres will not be permitted under any circumstances.

The UPSC Mains will cover a wide range of papers including Essay, General Studies, Optional Subject papers, and language papers. Strict discipline, compliance with rules, and proper documentation are crucial for candidates.

Even minor lapses such as forgetting the admit card, failing to carry a valid ID, or bringing prohibited items can jeopardise months of preparation.

Exam Timings

The Mains examination will be conducted on August 22, 23, 24, 30, and 31, 2025, in two sessions daily:

Morning Session: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (entry closes at 8:30 AM)

Afternoon Session: 2:30 PM – 5:30 PM (entry closes at 2:00 PM)

Candidates are strictly warned that even a one-minute delay could lead to disqualification from that session, as gates will be shut sharply at the designated closing time.

What To Carry To The Exam Centre

Candidates must bring the following items:

Printed e-Admit Card (mandatory)

Valid photo ID proof (Aadhaar, Passport, PAN, Voter ID, etc.)

Two passport-size photographs (in case admit card photo is blurred)

Black ballpoint pens and pencils

Non-programmable calculator (if required)

Transparent water bottle

Items Not Allowed

Certain items are strictly prohibited inside the examination hall:

Mobile phones, smartwatches, earphones, pagers, or electronic devices

Books, notes, bags, or heavy items (no storage available at the venue)

Smart/digital watches (only simple analogue watches are permitted)

Examination Rules

Candidates must write answers only in the official Question-Cum-Answer (QCA) booklets provided. Any unused space must be crossed out before submission. Answer booklets must be handed over immediately after the exam ends. Violations of discipline, unfair practices, or disregard for exam rules could lead to cancellation of candidature.

UPSC aspirants are advised to remain calm and avoid last-minute mistakes.
