UP woman shot dead in hospital bed; assailant caught, handed over to cops

A woman admitted to a hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Chandauli district was shot dead inside her ward after a man allegedly entered the facility posing as a patient, with police confirming that a suspect has been detained and handed over for questioning.

The murder took place amid a string of shooting incidents reported in the district within 24 hours, including two separate killings inside trains, prompting police to investigate whether the cases are connected.

SHOT INSIDE HOSPITAL WARD

Police identified the victim as Lakshmina Devi, who had been admitted to a private Ayurvedic hospital and medical college in Chandauli for treatment.

According to police, the attacker arrived at the hospital pretending to seek medical treatment before entering the ward and opening fire on the woman.

“She died on the spot,” ADG Varanasi Zone Piyush Mordia told reporters while briefing the media.

“A person came from outside on the pretext of treatment. He went inside and shot the woman sitting in the ward,” he said.

The accused was later caught and handed over to police officials for investigation.

“One person has been taken into custody and is being questioned by the police,” the ADG said.

POLICE PROBE POSSIBLE LINK TO TRAIN MURDERS

The hospital shooting came hours after two passengers were shot dead in separate train incidents linked to the Chandauli region.

One passenger was killed near Sakaldiha railway station in a train travelling from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction towards Tadi Ghat, while another victim, identified as Dinesh Sahu from Bihar’s Gaya, was shot dead aboard the Sealdah-Jammu Tawi Express.

Following the three murders, police formed a joint investigation team comprising Government Railway Police and local police officers.

“We are investigating all these incidents. The railway police team and Chandauli police team are involved,” Mordia said.

When asked whether the three murders were connected, the ADG said police were still examining all angles.

“I am not in a position to say this right now. We are investigating the matter thoroughly,” he said.

Police claimed the investigation was progressing rapidly and more details would emerge after questioning the detained suspect and analysing evidence from all three crime scenes.
