Payal Dixit, a Class 6 student at Upper Primary School in Pipargaon, Farrukhabad, got an opportunity to serve as the symbolic District Magistrate (DM) for a day under the Uttar Pradesh government’s Mission Shakti campaign. The initiative was conducted under the direction of Farrukhabad District Magistrate Ankur Lather to promote girls’ empowerment and introduce students to administrative responsibilities.

Payal, the daughter of farmer Rajesh Dixit, took the DM’s chair and participated in a public grievance hearing at the district office on October 13. During the session, she listened to six complainants and directed the concerned officials to take appropriate action on their complaints, according to news agency IANS.

The exercise gave the student an opportunity to understand how district administration functions and how officials receive and respond to public grievances.

During the programme, Payal was introduced to the responsibilities of district-level officials and the process of handling complaints from residents. The initiative was designed to familiarise her with administrative procedures, public service and the responsibilities associated with the District Magistrate’s office.

The symbolic role did not amount to a formal appointment as District Magistrate. Instead, it offered Payal a first-hand experience of the administrative system and an opportunity to observe how public complaints are addressed.

Mission Shakti is a Uttar Pradesh government initiative focused on women’s safety, security and empowerment. It also seeks to encourage confidence, leadership and awareness among girls and women.

Under the campaign, initiatives such as giving schoolgirls symbolic administrative roles are intended to help them understand public institutions and inspire them to consider leadership and public service in the future.

Payal’s experience highlights how such initiatives can introduce students to governance beyond the classroom and give them an opportunity to learn about public responsibilities at an early age.
