Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reiterated his appeal for cost-cutting measures across the country in the wake of the economic challenges caused by the US-Iran war. The Prime Minister again urged citizens to cut fuel consumption by using public transport and electric vehicles, while also advocating work-from-home arrangements in both government and private offices.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Sardardham Hostel in Gujarat’s Vadodara, PM Modi emphasised the need for collective participation to reduce the burden on India’s foreign exchange reserves and import dependence, citing the soaring prices of imported goods as supply chains remain disrupted.
“A major share of India’s imports comes from crude oil. Unfortunately, the very region that supplies oil to a large part of the world is currently caught in a situation of conflict and instability. Therefore, until conditions return to normal, all of us will have to take small yet meaningful resolutions in our daily lives for the larger interest of the nation,” he said.
“I appeal to every citizen of my country to reduce the use of petrol-diesel as much as possible. Use the metro, make greater use of electric buses and public transport, and promote carpooling. Those who have a car should take more people along in one vehicle. Digital technology has now made so many things easy that technology’s assistance will also be very beneficial for us. It is essential that priority be given to virtual meetings and work from home in both government and private offices,” PM Modi further said.
The Prime Minister also reiterated that a huge amount of India’s money is being spent on gold imports and called for temporarily halting purchases. He also vouched for “Vocal For Local”, prioritising locally manufactured products over foreign goods.
