Unnao Rape Case: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday said that it will challenge the Delhi High Court’s order granting bail to former BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case and will approach the Supreme Court at the earliest.
The probe agency said that it has examined the order passed by a Division Bench of the Delhi High Court, which suspended Sengar’s sentence and granted him bail while his appeal against conviction is pending. It said that the CBI will file a Special Leave Petition (SLP) before the Supreme Court seeking to set aside the relief granted to the convict.
It said that the probe agency had strongly opposed both Sengar’s appeal and his bail petition before the Delhi High Court. The agency had filed detailed replies and written submissions in a timely manner, arguing against the suspension of sentence. The victim’s family had also vehemently opposed the bail petition, citing serious concerns over safety and continued threats.
