Long-running dispute over Tibet: China says that Tibet has been its part since the middle of the 13th century and has been ruled by the Chinese Communist Party since 1951. Many Tibetans believe that they have long been effectively independent and that China wants to destroy their cultural identity as well as exploit the resource-rich region. China does not recognize Tibet’s government-in-exile, the Central Tibetan Administration. Also, it has not had any formal talks with the representatives of the Dalai Lama since 2010. According to the organization running the Free Tibet campaign, since 2009, more than 150 Tibetans have committed suicide in protest against Chinese rule. The organization says that many protesters raised slogans demanding the return of the Dalai Lama, the release of the Panchen Lama and more human rights and freedom in Tibet.
