Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah thanked India and China for help after the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods at the UN General Assembly.
He said that Nepal, India and China will have to come together to deal with the growing threat in the Himalayas. Shah described the Bhotekoshi flood as a disaster not just for Nepal but a warning for the entire world.
Shah said that this flood destroyed roads, bridges, schools, houses and people’s businesses. He appealed to the world to provide grants, not loans, that do not have to be returned, to rebuild the poor countries affected by the climate disaster.

Proposal to create a joint warning system for the Himalayas with India and China
Prime Minister Balen Shah proposed to create a joint warning system between Nepal, India and China, so that advance information about flood and glacier related disasters can be received.
According to this –
- All three countries will share information received from satellite
- Dangerous glacier lakes will be continuously monitored
- Flood early warning system will be strengthened
- In case of disaster, we will work together in relief and rescue operations.
Shah said that the Himalayas should not become an example of divided information between countries, but of cooperation and shared preparedness. Shah said that by working together and sharing information, damage caused by disasters can be reduced.
Bhotekoshi flood is not only Nepal’s problem
Nepal PM said that the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli disaster should not be seen as the problem of just one country. He said that climate change is affecting the entire Himalayan region.
The flood came after the glacier broke
In late August, a glacier broke near the border of Tibet region of Nepal and China. After this there was a landslide and sudden flood. Water and debris caused massive destruction in the valleys below.
At least 1,450 people have died in this disaster. Even after several weeks, relief work and search for people is still going on. More than 6,000 people are missing in the area. Shah said that many of these people may never be found.

Nepal needs help equal to 10% of GDP
According to Shah, after this disaster, Nepal needs help equal to about 10% of its GDP to rebuild roads, bridges, houses and other essential things.
Nepal’s Prime Minister Balen Shah also said that,
The world has made a very strong system of supplying goods for war, but the system of providing food and relief to the needy people is not that strong.
