A viral video purportedly showing Ujjain Municipal Corporation building officer Rajkumar Rathore and his wife trying crocodile meat during a holiday in Thailand has drawn the civic body’s attention to his foreign travel. The corporation has sought to know whether Rathore obtained the mandatory official permission before travelling abroad.

Municipal Commissioner Abhilash Mishra said Rathore, who serves as the building officer for Zones 1, 2 and 3 of the Ujjain Municipal Corporation in Madhya Pradesh, had taken leave from October 19 to 23. However, Mishra said Rathore’s leave application did not mention that he intended to travel overseas. The civic body is examining whether he obtained the required permission for the trip.

Video Shared On Social Media

The controversy began after a video, reportedly shared on the social media account of Rathore’s wife, circulated online. It shows the couple standing near what appears to be a restaurant or food stall, where they are reportedly being served crocodile meat.

The clip carries the caption, “Trying crocodile for the first time in Thailand.” It also contains visuals of dead crocodiles.

While the video has drawn attention because of the unusual food shown, the municipal corporation’s concern centres on whether Rathore travelled abroad without obtaining the required official approval.

Rathore is learnt to have travelled to Thailand without securing the mandatory permission. However, the matter is yet to be examined by the civic body, which has said it will look into whether the applicable rules were violated.

Departmental Action May Follow

Government service rules require officials and employees to obtain permission from the competent authority before undertaking a foreign trip.

Mishra said the corporation would examine the circumstances surrounding Rathore’s travel and consider departmental action if a violation of the rules is established. The commissioner’s statement places the focus on the permission required for foreign travel by government employees, rather than the food featured in the viral video.

The civic body’s examination will determine whether the officer had obtained the necessary approval for his Thailand visit, which was not mentioned in his leave application, according to Mishra.
