The US naval blockade on Iranian ports will be lifted and ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz “may start the process of heading home,” President Donald Trump said in a social media post on Friday.
Trump said Iran “will complete the immediate removal” of mines in the strait, after which the US naval blockade on Iranian ports “will now be lifted.”
“Ships caught in the Strait due to our amazing and unprecedented Naval Blockade, which will now be lifted, may start the process of ‘heading home!!’” he wrote in a lengthy post on Truth Social.
Making ‘final determination’ on Iran deal
The US President made the announcement as he prepared to enter the Situation Room for what he described as a “final determination” on a potential agreement with Iran aimed at ending the war in West Asia.
“I will be meeting now, in the Situation Room, to make a final determination,” Trump wrote, stressing that Iran must agree never to develop nuclear weapons and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to shipping.
He said Tehran must ensure “unrestricted shipping traffic in both directions” through the strategic waterway.
“The Hormuz Strait must be immediately open, no tolls, for unrestricted shipping traffic, in both directions,” he wrote.
However, it was not immediately clear whether Iran had agreed to these terms or whether the US blockade had been formally lifted ahead of Trump’s final decision.
Trump also said that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles would be “unearthed by the United States” in coordination with Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, and destroyed.
Following reports that Iran had sought financial compensation for the war and that the White House had considered investment-linked arrangements, Trump said “no money will be exchanged, until further notice.”
He added that only “items of far less importance” had been agreed so far, without offering further details.
