Former American President Donald Trump had just begun his speech in Pennsylvania when the shots rang out. A bullet had pierced his right ear. The Secret Service swarmed Trump, the probable Republican candidate for the November 5 presidential election, and were rushing him off the podium. That’s when Associated Press photographer Evan Vucci shot him in what is going to be a defining photograph of US history.
Before being hurried off the stage, Trump pumped his fist in the air, blood from his ear streaking on his steely face. The American flag behind him.
Evan Vucci risked his life to capture this image of Trump’s defiance.
Vucci, an award-winning photographer, across the podium amid gunfire and screams to click the photo, which is being touted as the one defining the failed assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. It has also become the most-shared.
“Not only is this moment historical, but the photo that Evan Vucci took is also perfect. The level of compositional mastery comes from over two decades of experience in the field and a sharpness that only comes from thousands and thousands of ‘reps’,” said David Altizer, a content creator.
As Vucci ran and clicked the iconic photo, videos of which are being shared online, it was his confidence and composure that’s what was on display.

Vucci is a veteran who has also served in war-torn Iraq. Bullets don’t scare him from doing what he is meant to do.
From the war zones of Iraq to the corridors of power in Washington DC, he has covered it all.
He is the Chief Photographer for the Associated Press in Washington and the recipient of the Pulitzer Prize and the Edward R Murrow award.
It was his documentary video of a platoon of American soldiers, and their families, during a 15-month combat tour in Mosul, Iraq, that won him the Murrow award.
Vucci received the Pulitzer Prize in 2021 as part of the Associated Press team that was awarded for Breaking News Photography for coverage of the aftermath and protests of the death of George Floyd.
The Trump photo from Pennsylvania on July 14 will be among his best.
“This will be in ‘100 photos that changed the world’s books for generations to come,” said Gerry Lynch, a communications professional.
The image is going to bolster the aura of invincibility that Republican followers associate with Donald Trump.

Trump has strategically utilised his jailhouse mugshot as a potent symbol in his campaigning efforts.
Emblazoned with slogans like ‘Deep State Target’ and ‘Still My President’, the image has become a rallying cry for his supporters, portraying him as a victim of political persecution.
This unconventional use of a mugshot underscores Trump’s defiance against establishment norms and his ability to harness controversy to galvanize his base.
His supporters love him for his defiance and anti-establishment approach.
With his confrontational style, whether in policy decisions or public statements, he tries to emphasise strength and defiance.
