US President Donald Trump on Monday expressed hope of reaching a deal with Iran, saying Tehran wanted a settlement as diplomatic efforts gathered pace to end the eight-month-old conflict.

However, concerns over a possible return to military action remain, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly pushing Washington for another round of strikes after Tuesday’s US midterm elections.

“Oil Prices are DROPPING LIKE A ROCK, down almost $10 a Barrel, A RECORD, because people feel that there will not be a War with Iran. Iran wants a settlement, as soon as possible. It could happen!” Trump posted on Monday.

US Vice President JD Vance also expressed optimism about the prospects of a negotiated settlement with Tehran.

“The president and I both feel pretty good about the prospects for potentially coming to a negotiated settlement,” Vance told reporters, adding that the two sides had made some progress.

Oil prices fell sharply amid renewed hopes of a diplomatic breakthrough. Brent crude dropped around 7.5% on Monday to about $104.98 a barrel, although prices remained well above the roughly $70 level seen before the war.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said indirect negotiations with Washington were underway through mediators, including Qatar and Pakistan. Tehran also offered to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under strict conditions.

“Given the sensitivity and gravity of the current situation, consultations and deliberations are very intensive,” Araghchi said in a video interview with the official IRNA news agency.

Meanwhile, a report by Axios said Vance had sent a letter to Iranian national security chief Mohsen Rezaei regarding possible fresh talks, marking a high-level diplomatic outreach from Washington.

Netanyahu Pushes Trump For Fresh Strikes

Despite the diplomatic efforts, Netanyahu is reportedly urging Trump to launch another wave of strikes against Iran after the US midterm elections, according to the Associated Press.

An Israeli push for renewed military action comes as Netanyahu faces political uncertainty at home after losing his parliamentary majority in last week’s elections.

According to the report, Netanyahu pressed Trump to consider fresh strikes during a call over the weekend, but the US President did not commit to military action.

Several US allies in the Middle East have also warned that renewed attacks could destabilise the region and trigger further retaliation by Iran-backed groups, including the Houthis in Yemen and militias in Iraq.
