US President Donald Trump has rejected an Iranian proposal for a seven-day ceasefire and told aides that he expects US bombing of Iran to resume after the November midterm elections, according to US officials quoted by the Wall Street Journal.
The proposal from Tehran would have involved reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restarting nuclear talks in exchange for the US lifting its blockade of Iranian ports. The blockade has caused deep damage to Iran’s economy.
As per reports, Trump is “skeptical” that Tehran will meet his demands. He has said publicly that Tehran is seeking a deal after the midterms that would dismantle Iran’s nuclear programme.
Iran offers seven-day plan
Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly that Tehran had proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear negotiations within seven days.
Iran’s proposal was conditional on the US lifting its naval blockade, waiving oil sanctions and observing a ceasefire.
Araghchi said Iran had presented Washington with a “concrete” seven-day plan to reopen the strategically important waterway, putting the next decision in the hands of the US.
“If the necessary conditions are met, the strait can be reopened, a normal maritime passage restored within seven days. The choice now rests with the United States,” Araghchi told reporters at the United Nations on Friday.
‘Actions are not new’
The Iranian foreign minister said the measures being sought from the US were not new.
“The actions that the United States should take are not new. They are all already in the MOU,” he said, referring to the memorandum of understanding agreed between Iran and the US in June.
Iran’s proposal comes as the blockade of Iranian ports continues to put pressure on the country’s economy, while the Strait of Hormuz remains central to the dispute.
According to the Wall Street Journal, however, Trump has rejected the seven-day ceasefire proposal and told aides that he expects US bombing of Iran to resume after the November midterm elections. This comes as the US-Iran conflict hits a stalemate, with no signs of a breakthrough.
