Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to meet US President Donald Trump soon, Putin’s foreign affairs adviser said on Thursday.
Speaking to Russian media on Wednesday, Yury Ushakov, senior Kremlin aide and former Russian ambassador to the US, confirmed that arrangements for the meeting are currently underway and an official announcement will be made “a little later.”
“Yes, the meeting has been agreed. Preparations are ongoing, and we will announce the date and venue a little later,” Ushakov said, without disclosing further specifics.
This would be the first meeting between Putin and Trump since Trump returned to office this year.
On Wednesday, a White House official had said that Trump could meet Putin as soon as next week.
This comes as the US continued preparations to impose secondary sanctions, including potentially on China, to pressure Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
The same day, Trump had also said that US envoy Steve Witkoff made “great progress” in his meeting with Putin.
The US President updated some of Washington’s European allies after the meeting.
“My Special Envoy, Steve Witkoff, just had a highly productive meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin,” Trump mentioned in a post on Truth Social.
“Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come,” he added.
The meeting between Putin and Witkoff came days before the White House’s deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine or potentially face severe economic penalties that could also hit countries buying its oil.
Meanwhile, Ushakov said that Putin and Witkoff had a “useful and constructive conversation” that focused on the Ukrainian crisis.
He also said it was a nod toward improving relations between Washington and Moscow, “prospects for possible development of strategic cooperation between the US and Russia.”
