US President Donald Trump has dismissed fears that artificial intelligence could threaten humanity as a “hoax”, while rejecting calls for tighter controls on the fast-growing technology.
His comments came after several leading tech figures urged a slower pace of AI development amid growing concerns about its potential risks.
“AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Monday. He compared such warnings with the Russia investigation and his first-term impeachment over Ukraine, which he has repeatedly described as political “hoaxes”.
“No different from RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA — UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #1 — IMPEACHMENT HOAX #2 — and all of the other HOAXES and SCAMS that America was forced to endure through the Destructionists’ and Deviants’ foul play and illegal conduct,” he wrote.
Trump also said AI and data centres could become the “Greatest Economic Development Engine in History”, bigger than oil, gold, diamonds or even the internet.
