Tripura’s Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman has assured that all students who have passed the state’s class 12 board examination will be granted admission to government degree colleges. This assurance comes in the wake of recent student protests over undergraduate admissions at Ramthakur Degree College in Agartala, where a professor was suspended for allegedly admitting over 100 students illegally by forging the principal’s signature.
“I assure the students who have cleared higher secondary examinations that they will get admission in government degree colleges, but subjects and colleges may not be of their choice. This year, over 24,000 students cleared the higher secondary examination, while the state has 33,000 seats in colleges,” Barman stated.
Highlighting efforts to address the issue, Barman said he has instructed the principals of degree colleges in Agartala to increase the number of available seats so that more students can secure admission.
Regarding the student agitation at Ramthakur College, the minister clarified, “The department has nothing to do with what had happened outside the campus.”
Meanwhile, when contacted, Principal Papri Das Sengupta of Ramthakur Degree College said the institution has already admitted more students than its capacity allows. “We can’t allow more admissions. The admission was carried out purely on the basis of merit through an online portal,” she added.
The controversy erupted following allegations that a professor at Ramthakur Degree College admitted over 100 students by forging the principal’s signature, triggering student protests demanding transparency in the admission process. The suspension of the professor is seen as a move to curb irregularities and restore order at the college.
With the number of students passing the higher secondary exam reaching over 24,000 this year and available college seats at 33,000, authorities are working to ensure all eligible students receive admission, even if it means adjusting subjects or colleges allotted to them.
