A weekend meant for speed and spectacle has instead been marked by tragedy.
A spectator was killed and two others injured after a crash during the Rally Sudamericano Mina Clavero in Argentina on Sunday, according to the FIA.
The incident occurred during a timed stage when driver Didier Arias and co-driver Hector Nunez lost control of their Volkswagen Polo R5 after clipping an embankment.
Video footage from the scene showed the car rolling violently off the road and into a spectator area before coming to rest on its side.

While Arias and Nunez escaped without serious injury, the consequences in the crowd were devastating as one spectator died and two others were injured.
FIA Confirms Casualties, Launches Investigation
In an official statement, the FIA said, “The FIA is deeply saddened by the tragic incident that occurred today… in which one spectator lost their life and two others were injured.”

The governing body confirmed it will support organisers, including the Automóvil Club Argentino and CODASUR, along with local authorities, in a full investigation.
Event Suspended Indefinitely
Organisers acted swiftly in the aftermath.
“The established safety protocols for the race were immediately activated,” a statement read, confirming that emergency medical and police teams responded on-site.
Despite those efforts, the fatality was confirmed, and the rally was suspended indefinitely.
“The organisers express their deepest condolences… and extend their sympathies to the family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Support services have also been extended to those affected by the incident.
A Dark Weekend for Motorsport
The tragedy comes just a day after another fatal incident in Europe, where Finnish driver Juha Miettinen lost his life during qualifying at the Nürburgring.
While safety protocols exist, incidents like this raise fresh questions about enforcement, crowd control, and risk management.
For now, though, the focus remains on those affected.
