For nearly 18 hours on Monday, Mumbai and Pune were virtually severed — landslides shut the expressway at two points, a rail landslide cancelled 26 trains, mudslides hit Urse toll plaza twice, and a fallen tree blocked the old highway too. Buses stopped running, commuters were stranded, and it took until 10pm for road traffic to be restored.
The chaos began before dawn and snowballed through the day as authorities scrambled from one crisis to the next — a landslide on the rail tracks, followed by one at the Missing Link tunnel, then two separate mudslides at Urse, and a fallen tree that ruled out the old highway as a backup route.
By evening, the human cost of the disruption was clear: stranded commuters, cancelled homecomings, and a creeping realisation of just how fragile the connectivity between India’s two big cities really is.
