The government plans to present a resolution praising India’s military response to Pakistan’s terror infrastructure

After a turbulent week marked by ongoing disruptions over the SIR voter list review drive and allegations surrounding the Election Commission’s role ahead of the Bihar elections, the Lok Sabha is anticipated to return to order when it reconvenes next week.
On Friday afternoon, Speaker Om Birla held a meeting with floor leaders, resulting in the decision to commence a special discussion on “Operation Sindoor” on Monday, concluding by Wednesday.
“Initially, the opposition resisted the discussion under Rule 193 and demanded a special debate—the government eventually conceded,” a senior government source informed CNN-News18.
Significantly, the special discussion will be followed by a resolution. The government plans to present a resolution praising India’s military response to Pakistan’s terror infrastructure—a retaliation prompted by the brutal killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam on April 22. The resolution will also commend the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces for their role in the counteroffensive.
“If Parliament adopts this resolution, it will become part of the official record—a historic moment showcasing how the Indian government empowered the armed forces to deliver an unprecedented blow to Pakistan’s terror networks,” a source revealed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to speak during the debate. Key government leaders set to address the House include defence minister Rajnath Singh, who will likely elaborate on the military operation, and home minister Amit Shah, who will discuss the Pahalgam attack and the broader security situation in Kashmir.
Opposition leaders have repeatedly questioned the security lapse that led to the tragedy and the whereabouts of the perpetrators.
External affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar is also expected to speak. He will outline the international community’s perspective on India’s counterterrorism efforts and is likely to reiterate—officially—that the ceasefire with Pakistan was a mutually agreed decision, with no foreign mediation. This clarification holds significance, particularly in light of US President Donald Trump’s repeated claims of having brokered peace between India and Pakistan through a trade-based proposal. With multiple delegations sent abroad to present India’s case on terrorism, the government plans to detail the outcomes of those efforts. Jaishankar, who personally debriefed all delegates, will likely highlight global responses to India’s outreach.
The ruling BJP and its NDA allies intend to deploy their prominent voices in the debate. From the JD(U), union minister Lalan Singh is expected to participate. The TDP is set to field Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and Ganti Harish Madhur Balayogi, both of whom were part of international delegations promoting Operation Sindoor. Shrikant Shinde, representing Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), will also speak. As the youngest MP to have led a delegation to five countries, including the UAE and several African nations, he is expected to share insights on India’s diplomatic offensive. Union ministers Chirag Paswan and Anupriya Patel—representing key NDA allies—will also speak.
On the opposition side, pointed questions are expected. While most opposition parties have supported the armed forces’ actions and India’s fight against terrorism, they have also raised concerns that remain unaddressed—such as the number of fighter jets India lost, whether there was a security lapse in Pahalgam, and why Trump was allowed to take credit for the ceasefire.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to lead the opposition’s charge in the debate. It remains to be seen whether the party will also allow Manish Tewari or Shashi Tharoor—both of whom participated in multi-party foreign delegations—to speak.
Other notable opposition leaders likely to participate include SP president Akhilesh Yadav, and TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee, who was part of a JD(U)-led delegation. DMK’s Kanimozhi, NCP(SP)’s Supriya Sule, and Shiv Sena (UBT)’s Arvind Sawant will also take part in the discussion.
The high-stakes debate will span three days, with the BJP expected to receive 8 out of the 16 total hours allocated, proportionate to its strength in the House.
