TMC Rajya Sabha MP Crisis Live Updates: Founded by former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is currently grappling with an unprecedented bout of internal turmoil. Questions over the party’s unity have intensified amid a series of developments in recent days, including the resignation of senior leaders, the rise of rebel factions among MLAs and MPs, talk of a merger with the Congress and fresh organisational concerns.
The rift first became visible in the West Bengal Assembly. Last week, Speaker Rathindra Nath Bose recognised a group of 58 dissident TMC legislators headed by Ritabrata Banerjee as the principal Opposition bloc.
Signs of unrest have also surfaced within the party’s parliamentary ranks. Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who stepped down from all party positions last week, claimed that close to 20 MPs are backing her group and said they are prepared to extend support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Meanwhile, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee was questioned by the CID for nearly five and a half hours in connection with the forged-signature investigation, with sources claiming that investigators were not satisfied with several of his responses.
