TMC Crisis Live Updates: Resignations, Merger Buzz Deepen Party Turmoil; Will TMC Join Hands With Congress?

West Bengal TMC Crisis Live Updates: Amid an intensifying internal rift within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), a wave of resignations and statements by rebel leaders has triggered uncertainty over the party’s internal unity and speculation about a possible merger.

Rebel TMC leader Ritabrata Banerjee on Wednesday firmly denied any possibility of a merger between the dissident faction and the Congress, saying the developments are purely internal to the party.

He also said that no segment of the party, including MPs, municipal representatives, Zilla Parishad members, or Panchayat members, is considering any move towards a merger.

Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury dismissed speculation about a potential Congress–TMC merger, stating that he was not aware of any such discussions.

Sonia Asks Mamata To Join Hands, Abhishek Banerjee Meets Rahul

Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi called on Mamata Banerjee to join hands with the Congress and reinforce opposition unity against the BJP. The appeal came two days after INDIA bloc leaders met in Delhi and emphasised the need for stronger coordination among alliance partners.

The message was conveyed during a meeting between Sonia Gandhi and Mamata Banerjee at 10 Janpath on Tuesday.

Adding to the political churn, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee met Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi at 10 Janpath in New Delhi on Wednesday. The meeting has drawn attention amid ongoing discussions around coordination within the INDIA bloc and reports of internal strain within the TMC.

Sushmita Dev Resigns

In another development, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan accepted the resignation of MP Sushmita Dev, with effect from June 10. Dev had earlier quit the Trinamool Congress (TMC), marking another prominent exit amid continuing internal turbulence within the party.

After her resignation, Sushmita Dev said she plans to focus her work in Assam. Her recent meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in New Delhi has fuelled speculation about a possible political realignment towards the BJP. However, she maintained that her decision was driven by personal and political considerations and rejected suggestions of opportunism.

A few days back, senior TMC leader Sukhendu Sekhar Ray had also stepped down from the Rajya Sabha and relinquished his primary membership of the party. He criticised the party’s performance in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections, describing the outcome as a result of what he called “15 years of anarchical rule” under the Mamata Banerjee-led government.

Rebel MLAs, MPs Rattle TMC

The latest turmoil comes days after rebel TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said that a group of 20 MPs has formally requested separate seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha, pointing to an organisational divide within the party’s parliamentary ranks.

The TMC leadership also faced a major setback in the West Bengal Assembly, where 58 of the party’s 80 MLAs defied the high command by rejecting its choice of veteran leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition and instead elected expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee to the post.
