The Dakshina Kannada District Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the Murder of Abdul Rahiman in Bantwal, Mangaluru, police officials said on Thursday.
The arrested individuals have been identified as 21-year-old Deepak, 21-year-old Pruthviraj and 19-year old Chintan, news agency Years reported citing the police.
On May 27, Abdul Rahiman was killed and his brother, Kalandar Shafi, suffered severe injuries after a group of miscreants attacked them with a sword in Ira Kodi, Kuriyala village, Bantwal Rural Police Station limits.
The incident took place when the deceased, a truck driver, and his brother were unloading gravel when two assailants on a motorcycle attacked them with a sword.
Both of them were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment where Rahiman succumbed to his wounds, while his brother is undergoing treatment.
The Bantwal Rural Police Station had registered a case under sections 191(1), 191(2), 191(3), 118(1), 118(2), 109, and 103 of the 190 BNS 2023.
Earlier today, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reviewed the law and order situation in the city in the wake of the incident. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Bantwal till May 30 as a precautionary measure.
The Chief Minister said that the efforts were underway to restore communal harmony in the region. “There should not be any hatred between Hindus and Muslims. We are committed to ensuring peace and harmony in Dakshina Kannada,” he said, adding that no one involved in the violence would be spared, regardless of their influence.
The killing comes close on the heels of Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty’s murder on May 1.
Suhas Shetty, a known rowdy sheeter and Hindutva activist, was murdered by an unidentified group earlier this month within the Bajpe police station limits in Mangaluru. He was attacked at around 8:30 pm while he was traveling with five of his associates when their vehicle was intercepted near Kinnipadavu Cross by the attackers.
The twin killings in the district, first of Suhas Shetty and now Abdul Rahiman, have raised concerns about retaliatory violence and growing polarisation in the coastal district.
