Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail, has been in the headlines for the last few days. Reports and social media chatter claim that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supremo was mysteriously killed in the Adiala jail.
Jail authorities have claimed that former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan is “fine and fit”, seeking to dismiss the death rumours. The rumours intensified after Imran Khan’s three sisters alleged that they were assaulted outside the jail by authorities for seeking a meeting with their brother.
A flamboyant leader, Imran Khan loves Bollywood films. Among his favourites is a Bollywood superstar. Hint: His close relative shares the same name as the cricketer-turned-politician.
Yes, you guessed that right. We’re talking about Aamir Khan. He was admired by former Pakistan PM Imran Khan. And the namesake connection? Aamir’s nephew is also named Imran Khan, the grandson of filmmaker Nasir Hussain.
Bollywood’s Imran Khan began his journey as a child actor, playing younger versions of Aamir in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak and Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.
He made his leading-man debut in 2008 with Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, winning instant acclaim and a Best Male Debut award. The actor went on to star in hits like Delhi Belly, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, I Hate Luv Storys, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, and Katti Batti before taking a break from films.
Coming to the other Imran Khan, aka, Imran Ahmad Khan Niazi, the Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister and legendary cricketer openly admired Aamir Khan’s cinema in media sessions.
In 2015, the former Pakistan cricket captain and politician Imran Khan met Aamir Khan at the Agenda Aaj Tak event in India. At the event, they participated in a session together, where Imran praised Aamir for his film choices and social awareness by giving the example of Dhobi Ghat.
“But I saw your film, Dhobi Ghat, by chance. The compliment is that you say that ‘I am not political.’ But this is politics. That you see the injustice in a society. Be it English or Urdu medium, where one child is privileged and the other is not. When you point this out and give people a social consciousness, it is a huge contribution,” he added.
After becoming Pakistan’s Prime Minister in August 2018, Imran Khan publicly invited Aamir Khan to his oath-taking ceremony. However, Aamir did not attend, reportedly due to political and security concerns.
The invitation also included Indian cricket legends Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev and Navjot Singh Sidhu. Mr Sidhu accepted the invitation, calling Imran Khan ‘a man of character.’
Cut to 2024 and 2025, the former PM continues mentioning Aamir in interviews about mental health and work ethic. He has also suggested an indirect ongoing dialogue and admiration but no public formal meetings.
The former prime minister founded the political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and entered politics. He led Pakistan from 2018 to 2022 and remains a prominent political figure. But after losing a parliamentary vote of no-confidence in 2022, he was removed from office.
