Secunderabad Railway Station is undergoing a Rs 715 crore makeover with new terminals, a sky concourse, Metro connectivity and modern facilities to serve 2.7 lakh passengers daily
Railway authorities say redevelopment work has already been completed at four key stations in Telangana — Begumpet, Karimnagar, Warangal and Sri Bala Brahmeswara Jogulamba. Work is progressing rapidly at several others, including Kazipet, Malkajgiri, Nizamabad, Peddapalli Junction, Hyderabad, Khammam, Adilabad and Hitech City stations.Among all the projects, the redevelopment of Secunderabad Railway Station is the most ambitious, with an investment of around Rs 715 crore. Opened on October 9, 1874, the historic station is one of South India’s busiest transport hubs. Nearly 200 trains pass through the station every day, serving close to 1.97 lakh passengers daily. The redevelopment project is designed to significantly increase Secunderabad station’s capacity to meet future demand. Once completed, the station will be able to handle around 2.7 lakh passengers every day, with peak-hour capacity reaching nearly 32,500 passengers per hour. Reports suggest that around 64% of the construction work has already been completed.Under the new master plan, state-of-the-art G+3 terminal buildings are being constructed on both the northern and southern sides of the station. A double-storey sky concourse with seating capacity for 3,000 passengers is also being developed. The upgraded complex will feature cafeterias, restaurants, retail outlets and entertainment spaces, transforming the station into a modern transit destination. To improve passenger movement, the station will be equipped with 26 lifts, 32 escalators and two travellators. Advanced surveillance systems are also being installed to strengthen security. Separate entry and exit zones have been designed to reduce congestion and ensure smoother passenger flow throughout the station. The redevelopment plan also focuses on improving multimodal connectivity. Dedicated walkways will link the station directly to the eastern and western Metro stations as well as the bus terminal. A multi-level parking facility is also being built to address parking challenges. Once completed, Secunderabad Railway Station is expected to function like a modern airport-style transport hub, setting a new benchmark for railway infrastructure in India.
