US President Donald Trump has warned that Iran could face a severe military response if Tehran is found to be behind an alleged attack on a Flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Israel.
Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, Trump said Iran was likely to have been involved in the incident, but stressed that the matter was still being investigated.
“I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is yes, but we’re working on it right now,” Trump said when asked whether Iran was linked to the attack.
Asked whether the US would retaliate if Iran was found responsible, Trump said: “Oh, they’ll be hit very hard, don’t worry.”
The Flydubai flight was diverted to Saudi Arabia after the co-pilot allegedly attacked the captain in the cockpit. Passengers helped overpower the co-pilot and prevent the aircraft from crashing.
The incident has prompted investigations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called the co-pilot as having undergone “Islamist radical indoctrination”, though authorities have yet to establish a confirmed motive or any Iranian link.
Trump hints at possible Iran strikes
In an interview with Time published on Thursday, Trump said it was “possible” that the US could resume bombing Iran after next month’s midterm elections.
He also repeated his earlier threat to “annihilate Iran”, saying military action had helped create peace and that lasting peace with Iran would otherwise be difficult.
The US has said its campaign against Iran is aimed at preventing Tehran from developing nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, the United States is preparing to send another aircraft carrier and up to 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East by the end of November, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Trump has also been quoted as telling aides that he expected US bombing of Iran could resume by late November.
