US First Lady Melania Trump has announced a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the war ravaged city of Oleshky, saying the deal will allow humanitarian aid to reach trapped civilians and help those who want to leave the city.

The localised ceasefire is scheduled to begin on October 29. Under the arrangement, civilians in the Russian-controlled city will be able to choose whether they want to evacuate to Russia or Ukraine. The White House said the pause in fighting will also allow civilian teams from both sides to assess the needs of residents.

Melania Trump said she became involved after learning about the worsening conditions in Oleshky. She described the city as being on the brink of a humanitarian disaster, with residents facing shortages of food, water and medicines.

“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster,” she said.

“It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible.”

The First Lady said she and her representative had worked directly with Russian and Ukrainian leadership to agree on the terms of the arrangement. She described herself as an “exclusive intermediary” in the discussions.

She said civilian representatives from Russia and Ukraine would work together to visit residents and assess what assistance they need.

“Residents who wish to evacuate will receive coordinated support and transportation to their preferred destination. I anticipate some will want to go to Russia, and some to Ukraine,” Melania Trump said.

She also said an “impartial American media organisation” would accompany the Russian and Ukrainian teams and document the process. The organisation was not named in the announcement. The White House said the arrangement is intended to ensure that the wishes of residents are respected.

Kremlin Welcomes Melania Trump’s Role

The Kremlin welcomed Melania Trump’s involvement in the arrangement.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia welcomed her “significant contribution” to the ceasefire and confirmed that Russian and Ukrainian forces were working on the timing and practical arrangements.

Ukrainian negotiator David Arakhamia also confirmed the agreement and said the operation would focus on creating humanitarian corridors for civilians and allowing aid to reach the city. He also acknowledged the roles played by Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV.

President Donald Trump also praised his wife, saying the ceasefire was “her initiative” and that her office had contacted both sides.

“What she wants to do is save children,” Trump told reporters.

Asked whether Melania Trump could take part in planned trilateral peace talks involving the US, Russia and Ukraine, Trump said: “No, but it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever heard.”

The development comes as President Trump continues efforts to end Russia’s war in Ukraine and push Moscow and Kyiv towards negotiations.

Why Oleshky Is Important?

Oleshky lies on the southern side of the Dnipro River in Ukraine’s Kherson region, opposite the city of Kherson. Russian forces seized the city in 2022.

The population has fallen sharply since the start of the war. The White House estimates that only around 1,700 to 2,000 people remain, compared with roughly 24,000 before Russia’s full-scale invasion. Most of those still living there are elderly people, along with around 50 children.

The city has also suffered extensive destruction. The White House said around 90 per cent of Oleshky was flooded after the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam.

Reports from the area have highlighted severe shortages of food, clean water, medicines and electricity. Residents have also faced dangers from mined roads and continuing military activity.

The planned ceasefire is therefore focused on humanitarian access rather than a broader halt to the Russia Ukraine war.

Melania Trump’s Earlier Work On Ukraine

The announcement builds on Melania Trump’s previous involvement in efforts to reunite Ukrainian children separated from their families during the war.

Her office said communication channels with Russia and Ukraine had already been established through earlier efforts involving the reunification of children. According to the White House, those channels helped her team begin discussions on the situation in Oleshky.

Melania Trump has generally maintained a relatively low public profile compared with her husband. However, she has increased her public engagements in recent months and launched initiatives focused on children, older foster youth and online safety.

Last week, she appeared alongside President Trump at the White House to launch a women’s health initiative.

She also released the documentary “Melania” in January, offering a behind the scenes look at her return to the White House. The film was backed by Amazon.

Earlier this year, she also gave a rare on camera statement addressing questions about Jeffrey Epstein, saying she had no knowledge of his sexual abuse.

The Oleshky agreement marks one of her most significant diplomatic interventions since becoming First Lady.
