Schools across Telangana’s Bhadradri Kothagudem district will remain closed for two days, September 23 and 24, amid heavy to very heavy rainfall and concerns over student safety. Bhadradri Kothagudem District Collector Ankit ordered the closure of all schools in the district as incessant rain has led to overflowing streams and canals and disrupted normal life in several areas.

The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy to very heavy rainfall, prompting concerns over the safety of students travelling to and from schools. Teachers’ unions had also urged the district administration to declare holidays in view of the adverse weather conditions.

The district administration said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure that students do not face risks while travelling during the heavy rains.

Along with announcing the holidays, the Collector directed education officials to remain alert and closely monitor the situation.

Mandal Education Officers (MEOs), principals of residential schools and Regional Coordinating Officers (RCOs) have been asked to take necessary precautions, particularly for students staying in school hostels.

Officials have been instructed to shift students from old or dilapidated buildings to safer premises if required. They have also been asked to monitor waterlogging around school premises and take measures to prevent accidents, including those caused by electrical hazards.

The Collector has directed revenue, police and education department officials to coordinate their efforts during the period of heavy rainfall.

Officials have been asked to remain available at their headquarters, monitor conditions in remote villages and ensure that relief and emergency measures can be deployed quickly if required.

Disaster management teams have also been directed to remain prepared at the field level to respond to emergencies involving students or their families.

The two-day closure applies to government, private, aided and Gurukul schools across Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

The district administration has warned private educational institutions against conducting classes during the holiday period. The Collector said strict action would be taken against institutions that violate the closure order and compel students to attend classes despite the adverse weather conditions.

Educational activities are expected to resume once weather conditions improve and the administration withdraws the precautionary measures.
