The controversy that started about two decades ago in Singur, West Bengal regarding Tata’s Nano project is once again in the headlines. After the formation of BJP government in the state, the discussion about the return of Tata Group to Singur is gaining momentum. State Industries Minister Tapas Roy said that talks are going on with Tata at an early stage. If Tata Group is ready to return then the government will not bring any other company there. Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari himself is monitoring the matter. However, for the farmers who had given their land for Nano in 2006, it is an unfulfilled dream. After Tata left Singur, thousands of families continued to go through financial and mental crisis. Even today, the government gives two thousand rupees and 16 kg of rice every month to about 3,600 such families, but many families have still not recovered from that shock. People are ready to give land to Tata. 75 year old Angoor Das says that her husband had given six bighas of land for the project. After Tata’s departure, he went into deep shock and died in the year 2019. Angoor Das says that if Tata returns, she is ready to give her remaining land also. When the Singur movement was going on, Anidya Das was just 12 years old. Today 32 year old Anidya has to go to Kolkata for employment. He says that if a factory had been set up, he would not have had to go to the city every day to work. His father had also given him land, but today even that land is no longer suitable for farming. Swaroop Das of Khaserbhedi village also gave two bighas of land for the project. He says that after getting compensation, he went to Dubai, while both his brothers were selected by Tata for mechanical engineering training. Training had started in Uttarakhand and there were hopes of a job, but all dreams were shattered with the closure of the project. They say that if Tata or any other big company comes today then they are ready to give the land again. The price of land has increased 15 times in 20 years. Dr. Udayan Das, President of Singur Shilp Vikas Samiti, formed in support of land acquisition, says that the prices of land have increased almost 15 times since 2006. According to him, the roadside land, which was priced at around Rs 3 lakh per bigha at that time, has now reached Rs 1 crore per bigha. In such a situation, if Tata returns again, more than Rs 1,300 crore may have to be spent on compensation alone. This is the reason why in his view Tata’s comeback will not be easy. 997 acres of land is becoming useless. At present, the 997 acres of land in Singur, where the Nano project was once started, is largely covered with bushes. This area was once considered to be the most fertile agricultural land in West Bengal, growing paddy, potatoes and other crops. But after the project was stopped, farming was also affected and a large number of farmers moved to other areas in search of employment. However, not everyone in Singur is in favor of Tata’s return. Prabir Patra, a prominent member of Singur Krishi Raksha Samiti, says that their opposition was not to the industries and neither is it today.
