The decision as to who will get the keys to power in Tamil Nadu is being taken today. But the biggest ’emotional card’ in this election has been the NEET exam. The regional parties of the state have promised in their manifesto to get rid of NEET. But the question is whether NEET will end with mere election victory?
What is the controversy?
Tamil Nadu Argues that NEET exam is against social justice. According to senior advocates and state government data, the difference in syllabus is huge. NEET is completely on CBSE pattern, due to which the students of Tamil Nadu State Board (TNSBSE) are lagging behind.
Mathematics of seats is also a big issue in this. well Before implementation, state board students had 70% seats, which has now fallen to less than 47%. Not only this, the coaching business is increasing. The annual coaching fee of Rs 1 to 5 lakh for NEET preparation has become a wall in front of the dreams of poor and rural students.
How far did the legal battle reach?
At present this matter is in the country’s biggest court, the Supreme Court. The Tamil Nadu government has challenged the President’s decision in the Supreme Court on November 15, 2025, in which he had refused to approve the state’s ‘Anti-NEET Bill’. The state government argues that the President rejecting the bill without any solid reason creates a ‘constitutional impasse’.
At present, horizontal reservation of 7.5% is implemented for government school students in the state, so that rural children can get a share in medical seats.
Will the new government be able to abolish NEET?
After the election results, the ‘new government’ will have two options. The first way in this is to aggressively advocate the case (Original Suit 2025) going on in the Supreme Court. The other way would be to create political pressure along with the Central Government for special exemption under the rules of ‘Concurrent List’.
