Around 62% of candidates who appeared for the special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for graduate teachers in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry have failed, according to the results released by the Tamil Nadu Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB). Meanwhile, reports suggest that teachers who did not qualify may get another opportunity to appear for the TET in December. An official announcement on this is expected next week.
The special TET exams were conducted for in-service teachers following the Supreme Court’s ruling on the eligibility requirements for teachers appointed before the introduction of the qualifying test.
The exam for secondary-grade teachers was held on July 4, while the test for graduate teachers took place on July 5. The exams were conducted across 835 centres.
According to the results, 47,594 out of 58,902 candidates who appeared for the secondary-grade teacher exam qualified. In the graduate teacher category, 60,732 out of 1,58,617 candidates passed. This means that approximately 38% of graduate teacher candidates qualified, while around 62% did not clear the examination, reported News18 Tamil.
Qualified candidates can download their eligibility certificates from the official TRB website, trb.tn.gov.in. Candidates have been advised to download their certificates within five days of the result announcement, as per the information provided by the board.
Why Was The Special TET Conducted?
The Teacher Eligibility Test is a qualifying exam for teachers under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009. Tamil Nadu has been conducting TET examinations since 2012.
Following a recent Supreme Court ruling requiring certain in-service teachers appointed before the introduction of TET to clear the qualifying examination, the Tamil Nadu government planned a special test for teachers working in government, government-aided and private schools.
Meanwhile, the possibility of another TET in December has brought some hope to candidates who did not qualify. However, teachers should wait for an official notification from the TRB before relying on the reported schedule.
