A horrifying murder near Harur in Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu has left an entire village shaken. A domestic dispute that had been simmering for months exploded into unimaginable violence when a husband brutally killed his wife inside their home.
The cruelty of the act, the presence of the couple’s elderly grandmother, and the involvement of two small children have added to the shock and fear in the area. Police say the accused fled with the children immediately after committing the crime, triggering an urgent search operation.
A Marriage Filled With Strain
The victim, Mahalakshmi, belonged to Harur in Dharmapuri district. She married Venkatesh from Kothiazhaganur near Bargur nine years ago. The couple had two children and appeared to lead a normal family life initially. But according to relatives, disputes gradually became frequent, and their marriage turned unstable.
Four months ago, tensions reached a point where Mahalakshmi left her marital home and moved back to her mother’s house. Neighbours say she had been unhappy for some time and wanted peace away from the constant arguments.
Venkatesh, however, attempted to reconcile. He visited his in laws home, apologised and assured everyone that he would not fight again. He took Mahalakshmi and the children to the Thiruchendur temple, hoping that a spiritual visit would help mend their relationship. The family believed this marked a fresh start.
The Fight That Turned Deadly
The return home was supposed to be a new beginning. Instead, the old pattern returned almost immediately. The couple began arguing soon after they reached the house. Mahalakshmi’s grandmother, who was present, tried to calm them down, but the quarrel intensified.
What happened next has left even experienced police officers stunned. Losing all control over his anger, Venkatesh allegedly stuffed a cloth into Mahalakshmi’s mouth to stop her from shouting. He then took a knife and slit her throat. Not stopping there, he reportedly hacked her hands and legs in a rage filled attack.
The grandmother, terrified and unable to intervene further, could only watch the horror unfold. By the time neighbours rushed in after hearing her cries, Mahalakshmi was lying lifeless in a pool of blood.
Panic In The Village
The gruesome nature of the murder created immediate panic in the neighbourhood. People gathered outside the house in shock as news spread rapidly. Many described Mahalakshmi as a quiet and gentle woman who had endured years of strain in her marriage.
Children in the area were particularly frightened, as news of the violence reached every home. The fact that the husband escaped with his two young children deepened the concern. Families feared for the safety of the minors and worried about what state of mind Venkatesh might be in.
Police Launch A Search Operation
The murder occurred under the Harur police limits. Officers arrived quickly after being alerted. They secured the scene, examined the house and sent the body to the government hospital for post mortem.
Police immediately formed special teams to track down Venkatesh, who had fled with the children. Search operations were carried out in surrounding villages, forest routes and bus stands. Relatives and friends were questioned to determine where he might be hiding.
Arrest And Next Steps
After hours of searching, police finally located Venkatesh and arrested him. The two children were found with him and safely taken into custody. Officers say they will be given counselling and care, as they have witnessed severe trauma.
The exact motive for the murder is still under investigation. While frequent quarrels appear to be the primary cause, police believe there may be deeper issues including long term domestic tension, financial stress or emotional instability.
A Community In Shock
The village remains disturbed by the brutality of the crime. Many residents say they have never heard of such extreme violence within a household. Local leaders and counsellors have urged families to seek help when disputes escalate instead of letting conflicts turn dangerous.
