The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a 33-year-old man allegedly linked to the banned terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Mumbai’s Mahim area, accusing him of spreading extremist content online and attempting to incite communal tensions.

The accused, identified as Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar, was arrested near Mahim Metro station by the ATS’s Kalachowki unit following a tip-off.

According to the ATS, Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar allegedly operated as a Rapido rider and sold perfumes while using social media to circulate radical and anti-national content. Preliminary investigations suggest that he was in direct contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives (PIOs), the agency said.

Ran Telegram Group, Shared Masood Azhar Speeches

The ATS investigation found that Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar allegedly operated a Telegram group on which he uploaded inflammatory audio speeches by Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar on June 1, 2026. The agency also alleged that Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar was an active subscriber to a Pakistan-backed extremist Telegram channel called IBN-e-Qasim.

Investigators further found an Instagram comment allegedly posted by Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar on a report about a security lapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai. The accused’s mobile phone allegedly contained anti-national material, according to the agency.

The ATS is now investigating Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar’s alleged network and attempting to identify others who may be connected to the case. The allegations are part of the ongoing investigation.
