Suriya fans protest in Puducherry as Karuppu release faces last-minute delay


Suriya’s fans in Puducherry staged protests outside theatres after several shows of Karuppu were cancelled, even as many of them had arrived early for first-day celebrations. The disruption left fans waiting outside cinema halls after preparing for the release with custom-made T-shirts, confetti, crackers, dhols, garlands and milk for celebratory rituals in front of the actor’s posters.

The cancellations led to confusion and anger at multiple venues, with some fans finding theatre gates locked and others learning about the cancelled shows only after entering the premises. Fans later raised slogans against producer S R Prabhu and production banner Dream Warrior Pictures over the unexpected delay.

Fans had turned up in large numbers to celebrate the release of the RJ Balaji directorial, which also stars Trisha Krishnan. Many planned traditional fan rituals before the screening, including garlanding Suriya’s posters and pouring milk over them.

An Instagram user, Mubarak, shared updates from Puducherry from Thursday morning. One of the videos showed fans outside Jeeva Rukmani theatre cheering as they poured milk over a garlanded poster of Suriya, while others celebrated with confetti and smoke bombs outside the venue.

Celebrations give way to confusion

The festive mood changed quickly after fans were told that the Karuppu show had been cancelled. Fans who had been dancing to the film’s songs moments earlier were left puzzled as there were no immediate updates from the production house.

Despite the cancellation, many fans continued to wait outside theatres in the hope of further announcements. The situation later escalated into protests in Puducherry over the delay in the film’s release. The film is now expected to release in theatres on May 15.

On Thursday afternoon, PVR INOX shared clips from the film’s trailer on social media and wrote, “Dark. Fierce. Unpredictable. One man. One rage. One story that’s about to shake the screens. Get ready to witness the power of #Karuppu at PVR INOX on 15 May!”

Financial issues linked to delay

The delay is also linked to reported financial issues around the filmincluding more than Rs 50 crore in unpaid dues associated with Dream Warrior Pictures, led by SR Prabu. Reports said Suriya had stepped in to clear dues related to Karuppuwhile the production house would have to address the remaining issues separately.

Karuppu The film stars Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, along with Yogi Babu, Jaffer Sadiq, Mansoor Ali Khan and Indrans in supporting roles. The film has music by Sai Abhyankkar, cinematography by GK Vishnu and stunt choreography by Anbariv.
