An army dog was killed on Monday as it was hit by a bullet during an encounter in the Akhnoor sector of the Jammu region. The canine sustained fatal injuries as it drew enemy fire when the troops were closing in on the terrorists, the Indian Army said.

“We salute the supreme sacrifice of our true hero — a valiant Indian Army dog, Phantom,” said the Indian Army’s Jammu-based White Knight Corps in a post on X.

“As our troops were closing in on the trapped terrorists, Phantom drew enemy fire, sustaining fatal injuries. His courage, loyalty, and dedication will never be forgotten,” the post added.

According to information available, four-year-old Phantom was a male Belgian Malinois – a breed that is a favourite of the special forces around the world. It was born on May 25, 2020, and was posted as an “assault dog” on August 12, 2022, after being issued from the RVC Centre in Meerut.

The army further said in the ongoing operation, one terrorist has been neutralised and warlike stores have been recovered.
