Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty has initiated a discussion on whether the current summer vacations during April-May should be shifted to June-July. The intense heat during April-May poses difficulties for children, but the heavy rains in June-July often lead to school closures and disruptions in studies. Additionally, there is a suggestion to consider changing the vacation period to May-June.
Minister Sivankutty has sought the opinions and suggestions of the public on this matter. He has requested feedback on the advantages and disadvantages of implementing this change, its impact on children’s learning and health, and its practicality for teachers and parents.
He shared a Facebook post to open this discussion: “Our school vacations in Kerala are currently in the months of April and May. It is a fact that the intense heat in the state during these months often causes hardship for children. At the same time, due to heavy rains during the monsoon period of June and July, classes often have to be closed and studies are disrupted.”
“In this context, a public discussion is being initiated about shifting the school vacation from April and May to the heavy rainy months of June and July. The idea of May-June is also emerging. I would like to know your valuable opinions and suggestions on this issue. What are the advantages and disadvantages of implementing this change? How will it affect the learning and health of children? How practical will it be for teachers and parents? How can we model the vacation arrangements in other states and countries?
