UPSC Success Story: Nisa Unnirajan’s journey shows that age, disability, or other obstacles cannot deter one from achieving their dreams.

UPSC Success Story: Hard work and determination can overcome any obstacle, as evidenced by the story of 40-year-old Nisa Unnirajan. Her journey shows that age, disability, or other obstacles cannot deter one from achieving their dreams. Despite facing numerous challenges, Nisa secured the 1,000th rank in her seventh attempt in 2024.
Nisa embarked on her civil service journey at the age of 35. While many people are either well-established in their careers or considering retirement after passing UPSC at this age, Nisa wrote her own success story. She managed her responsibilities at home with the support of her two young daughters, Nandana (11) and Thanvi (7), and her husband Arun, as well as her retired police personnel parents.
Although Nisa encountered failure multiple times, she never surrendered. She learned valuable lessons from each setback and continually improved her strategy. This resilient mindset propelled her to keep moving forward. She also suffered a hearing disability.
Fueled by her passion, Nisa prepared for the civil services at a private coaching center in Thiruvananthapuram. She drew immense inspiration from Kottayam’s sub-collector, Ranjit, who is also hearing impaired. Witnessing Ranjit’s success, Nisa found the strength to persevere, reported News18 Hindi.
Nisa filled her routine with inspiring autobiographies, success stories, and motivational videos. Her unconventional method maintained her mental strength and guided her toward success. Her achievement demonstrates that it is never too late and no dream is too grand to pursue. With strong determination, one can begin at any age.

UPSC, has an upper age limit of 42 for candidates with benchmarked disabilities (PwBD) across general, OBC, EWS, ST, and SC categories. PwBD candidates in the general, OBC, and EWS categories are allowed 9 attempts, while ST/SC candidates have unlimited attempts until they reach the age limit of 42 years.
