The UPSC exam is one of the toughest in the world. Every year, millions of young people try their luck. The stories of some of those who succeed are not just about marks and rank, but about unwavering patience and parental sacrifice. One such story is that of Jatin Jakhar from Haryana, who secured 191st rank in the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2025. His father is a security guard who motivated his son at every step.

Jatin Jakhar’s UPSC journey was far from easy. He failed the exam four times in a row. Repeated failures can be disheartening, but Jakhar turned them into his strength. He did not have the privilege of joining coaching institutes but what he did have was the memory of his father’s struggles and an unshakeable belief in himself. Finally, in his fifth attempt at the UPSC exam, Jakhar succeeded and began a new chapter of success.

A childhood spent in poverty

Jakhar comes from a humble background in Jhajjar district, Haryana. His father, a retired Army personnel, has been working as a security guard for a long time to support the family and provide quality education to his children. From a young age, Jakhar saw his father sacrificing his own needs for his children’s dreams, despite earning a modest salary. This became the driving force that inspired Jakhar to work hard day and night.

Failed 4 Times, Yet Never Gave Up

During his UPSC journey, Jakhar faced many challenges. When he began his preparation, he believed he would clear the exam quickly. But fate had different plans. In four consecutive attempts, he managed to reach the Mains or the interview stage, but was ultimately left out of the final list each time. There came a point when people around him started questioning his choices, but Jakhar shut himself in his room and continued working on his weaknesses.

The 2025 UPSC results turned out to be the most memorable day of Jakhar’s life. He secured the 191st rank in his fifth attempt. After completing his primary education, Jakhar left home to pursue his graduation and post-graduation. He spent nearly nine years away from his family, and during this period, he also prepared for the UPSC CSE. He had dreamt of becoming a government officer since his college days and remained determined to fulfil that dream.

Even four consecutive failures could not break Jakhar’s spirit. His clear strategy and strict discipline played a crucial role in his remarkable success in the fifth attempt. To strengthen his foundation, he focused on General Studies along with Political Science and International Relations. For current affairs, he thoroughly studied newspapers, government reports, and major global developments. Jakhar spent long hours practising answer writing for the Mains exam and appeared for numerous mock interviews to refine his performance in the final interview.
