World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continued his dominant run, beating Arthur Fils 6-2, 6-4 on Friday to reach the Madrid Open final.
The Italian, chasing history at Madrid, will face Alexander Zverev, who defeated Alexander Blockx 6-2, 7-5 in the other semi-final.
Sinner’s Streak Rolls On
Sinner stretched his winning streak to 22 matches and is now one win away from a fifth straight Masters 1000 title. With Carlos Alcaraz sidelined through injury, the Italian is the clear favourite heading into Sunday’s final.
“I played at a very high level, but I focus on always raising my level a little,” Sinner said. “Especially when the tournament gets serious… You have to raise your level if you want to keep going.”
“Obviously, there’s a bit of fatigue… My body isn’t completely fresh, but that’s normal… it means I’m playing a lot of matches.”
Comfortable Win Over Fils
Sinner took control early, breaking Fils twice in the opening set to wrap it up 6-2.
The second set was tighter, with the 21-year-old Fils showing more resistance and saving break points. But Sinner struck at 5-4 with a clean backhand winner and served out the match with ease.
Fils, ranked 25th, is still chasing his first Masters 1000 final.
Zverev Battles Past Blockx
Zverev, a two-time Madrid champion, had a smoother first set but was tested in the second by the unseeded Blockx.
The Belgian, ranked 69th, saved multiple break points and pushed Zverev deep, but the German finally broke through late — helped by a fortunate net cord — before sealing the match.
“I’m very happy, of course, to be in a final,” Zverev said. “Tennis is very, very easy for him right now… Maybe on Sunday, I will make it a bit more difficult for him.”
