Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla has made history by becoming the first Indian to set foot on the International Space Station (ISS). The milestone moment came on Thursday at 4:05 PM IST, when the Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) successfully docked with the ISS.
In a post on the social media platform X, SpaceX confirmed that docking was successful.
The Axiom-4 mission, launched aboard SpaceX’s newest Dragon capsule on Wednesday, carried four private astronauts, Shukla from India, along with Ax-4 commander Peggy Whitson from the United States, and mission specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary.
This mission also marks a major achievement for India as Shukla becomes only the second Indian to travel to space. The first was cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma, who flew aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 1984 — over four decades ago.
The Axiom Space team confirmed that the astronauts will spend around 14 days aboard the ISS, where they will carry out scientific experiments, take part in interviews, and engage in public outreach activities. The mission is Axiom Space’s fourth private flight to the ISS.
