Shreyas Iyer pulled off one of the greatest saves in the history of the Indian Premier League, silencing the Mumbai crowd at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. The Punjab Kings captain’s ridiculous effort saw the back of Hardik Pandya, who was dismissed for a 12-ball 14 in the 18th over of the match.
The incident occurred on the third ball of the 18th over, when Marco Jansen was bowling to Hardik Pandya. Jansen delivered a short-of-a-length ball around off, which Pandya attempted to dispatch with a flat-batted stroke. However, he lost control of his bottom hand and mistimed the shot, sending the ball high towards long on.

Stationed in the deep, Iyer produced a moment of brilliance. Running to his left from long on, he leapt while falling backwards and managed to grab the ball above his head, with both feet in the air. Showing remarkable awareness, he released the ball mid-air towards the incoming fielder at long off, where Xavier Bartlett completed the catch safely.
Ravi Shastri, on commentary, could not believe the core strength Iyer had to pull off that effort, where he hung in the air for a long time.
After completing the catch, Iyer looked at the MI crowd and pointed to his ears, asking why the fans had gone silent.
Mumbai Indians vice- captain Suryakumar Yadav looked in disbelief after Iyer’s save, which ended Hardik’s stuttering innings. The MI captain had a horrible time on the field on Thursday, scoring just 14 runs in 12 balls. Hardik’s failure with the bat, at a crucial stage of the game meant that Mumbai were not able to capitalise on Quinton de Kock’s century.
Despite de Kock’s unbeaten 112, MI failed to cross the 200-run mark at the Wankhede Stadium. They got restricted for 195/6 in 20 overs.
