Hasina was sentenced to five years for corruption in Bangladesh, Tulip Siddiq to two years, and Sheikh Rehana to seven years. Siddiq called the court process flawed and farcical.

The court said Sheikh Hasina misused her power as prime minister while Tulip Siddiq was guilty of corruptly influencing her aunt in helping her mother and two siblings get a land plot in a government project.

A Bangladesh court on Monday sentenced ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to five years in prison and her niece, British Labour Party lawmaker Tulip Siddiq, to two years in prison for corruption involving a government land project. Following the verdict, Siddiq called the court process as “flawed and farcical”.

CNN quoted Rabiul Alam, judge of Dhaka’s Special Judge’s Court, saying that Hasina misused her power as Prime Minister while Siddiq was guilty of corruptly influencing her aunt in helping her mother and two siblings get a land plot in a government project.

Meanwhile, Siddiq’s mother, Sheikh Rehana, was given seven years in prison and was considered the prime participant in the case. There are 14 other suspects in the case.

Following the announcement, Siddiq said the court process was “flawed and farcical” and the verdict should be treated with contempt.

The Guardian quoted her as saying: “This whole process has been flawed and farcical from the beginning to the end. The outcome of this kangaroo court is as predictable as it is unjustified.”

About the Land Scam Case

According to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Hasina, Siddiq and her mother along with several others have been accused of unlawfully obtaining plots during Hasina’s tenure as PM. The case was registered on January 13 and the chargesheet was submitted on March 10.

The Dhaka Tribune reported that the ACC filed six separate cases between January 12 and 14 with its Dhaka Integrated District Office-1 over alleged irregularities in the allocation of plots under the Purbachal New Town project.

The ACC said that Hasina illegally acquired six plots, each measuring 10 kathas (7,200 square feet), in the diplomatic zone of Sector 27 of the Purbachal New Town project for herself and her relatives, including her daughter Saima Wazed Putul and son Sajeeb Wazed Joy though they were ineligible under current regulations, in cooperation with senior officials of the state-run organisation Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk).

On November 27, as earlier reported by PTI, another Dhaka court sentenced Hasina to 21 years in prison in three separate corruption cases related to the Rajuk New Town Project in Purbachal.

Those sentences, seven years each, were ordered to run consecutively.

Judge Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, who delivered the earlier verdict, said the plot at the centre of those cases “was allotted to Sheikh Hasina without any application and in a manner that exceeded the legally authorised jurisdiction.”

Hasina was also fined Tk 1 lakh in each case, with additional jail time prescribed in case of default.

Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wajed Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Putul were also sentenced to five years imprisonment each in the November 27 cases, according to news agency PTI.
